Last updated: June 20, 2026. This is the plain-language version. We don't use legalese on purpose.
The short version
- Your manuscript is yours. We don't train AI on it. We don't sell it. We don't share it publicly.
- AI scans send your chapter text to Anthropic's API for analysis. That's how the tool works.
- We collect what's needed to run your account — nothing more.
- You can delete a chapter, a project, or your entire account at any time.
What we collect.
To run your NovelContinuity account, we collect:
- Account information: your name, email address, and password hash (we never store passwords in plain text)
- Manuscript content: the chapters you upload, broken into paragraphs and stored in your project
- Story elements you create: characters, locations, events, dates, plot lines, timelines, aliases, relationships, cross-references, character profiles, chapter summaries, project notes
- AI scan results: what the scan identified, your approve/reject decisions, and the resulting tags applied to your chapters
- Usage data: pages you visit and actions you take, used to understand how the tool gets used and to find bugs
- Payment data: when billing is active, payment processing is handled by Stripe; we don't store credit card numbers
We don't collect tracking pixels, cookies for advertising, behavioral data for resale, or any personal information beyond what's needed to run the service.
What we send to AI services.
When you run an AI scan or use any AI-powered feature (character profile generation, chapter summary, emotional beat classification, narrative voice detection), NovelContinuity sends the relevant text to Anthropic's Claude API.
Specifically:
- Chapter scans send the full text of the chapter you're scanning, along with the project's category structure
- Character profile generation sends the paragraphs where that character appears
- Chapter summaries send the chapter text
- Emotional beat classification sends the chapter text
- Narrative voice detection sends sampled paragraphs from the chapter
Anthropic processes these requests under their API terms of service. Per Anthropic's commercial API policy, content sent via the API is not used to train Anthropic's models. You can read Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service for the full policy.
We do not send manuscript content to any AI service other than Anthropic's Claude API. We do not use ChatGPT, Gemini, Llama, or any other AI service to process your text.
What we never do.
- We don't sell your data — to anyone, ever.
- We don't use your manuscript content to train AI models.
- We don't share your manuscript content publicly or with other users.
- We don't display advertisements in NovelContinuity, and we don't sell behavioral data to ad networks.
- We don't read your manuscripts for our own enjoyment or research. Our team does not browse user content.
- We don't use your work in marketing materials, demos, or examples without your explicit permission.
About the book examples on our site.
The examples shown on our marketing pages — Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Life on the Mississippi — are works in the United States public domain (published before 1930) and were imported from Project Gutenberg specifically for demonstration purposes. No user manuscripts are used in any marketing material.
Deleting your data.
You can delete your data at any time:
- Individual chapters can be deleted from your project's chapter list
- Entire projects can be deleted from your dashboard — this removes the chapters, story elements, timelines, plot lines, character profiles, and all derived data for that project
- Your entire account can be deleted from the Account page — this removes all your projects and all associated data
Once deleted, your data is removed from our active systems. Backups containing previously-deleted data are retained for up to 30 days as a safety measure against accidental deletion, then permanently destroyed.
How we secure your data.
- All connections to the site use HTTPS encryption
- Passwords are stored as bcrypt hashes, never as plain text
- Database access is restricted to the application server
- API connections to Anthropic are made over HTTPS with API key authentication
- We use industry-standard hosting infrastructure with regular security updates
We're a small team, and we take security seriously, but no system is perfectly secure. If you discover a security issue, please email support@novelcontinuity.com and we'll respond promptly.
Email-to-notes.
If you use the email-to-notes feature (sending notes to your project from your phone), those emails pass through Mailgun's inbound email service. Mailgun temporarily stores the email content while routing it to your project. Mailgun is a transactional email provider; they don't read or use your content beyond routing.
Changes to this policy.
If we update this privacy policy in ways that meaningfully affect how we handle your data, we'll email you and update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. We won't quietly change our practices.
Questions.
If you have questions about this policy, how we handle your data, or how to delete something, email support@novelcontinuity.com.
