Everything your manuscript needs

Every feature in NovelContinuity is built around one principle: the writer stays in control. The tool assists. You decide.

Available on Every Plan

The whole continuity workspace

Every feature below ships with every plan. No paywalls between you and the full toolset. You fill it in manually; the AI helps with the heavy lifting on the Advanced plan.

Insight — The Analytical Mirror

🧭

Before You Write compass

A forward-looking panel for planning your next chapter. See which characters have been absent the longest, recent locations, the latest timeline event, and how dialogue and pacing have trended — so you sit down to write with context, not guesswork.

👥

Character Presence Map

A grid of characters against chapters — see exactly who appears where. Reveals characters who've gone quiet, who dominates early chapters but disappears, and where your cast clusters.

📊

Pacing & dialogue trends

Word count per chapter as a bar chart. Dialogue-vs-prose ratio as a trend line with zone bands. See at a glance where chapters run long, where dialogue dominates, where prose takes over. Observations only, never verdicts.

Story Maps — Timeline & Plot Lines

🕐

Manuscript Timeline

Lay scenes out chronologically — what happens, what the reader learns, what's still hidden. One row per scene or beat. Multiple timelines per project for parallel threads. Build directly from a passage in the chapter reader.

🔗

Merged timelines for cross-cut sequences

Weave several timelines into a single braided view for cross-cut sequences — a raid closing in while a character races to escape. Events point to their home timeline, so editing in one place updates every merged view automatically.

🎯

Plot Lines & the Plot Line Map

Tag passages by narrative thread — investigation, romance, the protagonist's arc, any line your book is following. The Plot Line Map shows at a glance where each thread runs, and where one has gone quiet for a stretch. See how it works →

📍

Two questions, two maps

Timeline answers when something happens. Plot Lines answers which thread a passage carries forward. Different questions, complementary maps — together they show the architecture of a complex book, not just its contents.

Story Elements & Connections

🔍

AI story element detection

Scans every paragraph and identifies characters, locations, businesses, events, and any element type you define. Finds full names and shortened variations. 15 credits/month on Simple, 50 on Advanced. One credit = one chapter scan.

Accept / Edit / Dismiss review

Every AI suggestion goes through your review screen. Accept what's right, edit what needs adjusting, dismiss what doesn't belong. Nothing is added to your project without your decision.

📋

Paragraph-level tagging

Every tag is tied to the exact paragraph where it appears — not just the chapter. Know precisely where each element lives across your entire manuscript.

👥

Aliases for character variants

Link "Bob" to "Robert Calloway." Searching either name finds every paragraph where both appear. Aliases expand automatically in search results. See how it works →

Cross-references (XReferences)

Define cross-references between elements of different types — a character linked to a location, an event tied to a business. Find every paragraph where both appear. Potential XReferences surfaced automatically.

🤝

Relationships

Describe how elements connect — husband/wife, rivals, employer/employee, informant. Search by relationship to find every scene two elements share. Convert aliases to relationships in one click.

🔁

Rename & merge

Renamed a character mid-book? Fix it once. Rename the element and, if the new name already exists, merge the two — every tag, alias, relationship, and cross-reference follows. See the workflow →

Character Profiles

👤

Manual character profile

Every character gets a dedicated profile — physical description, background, relationships, key events, speech patterns. Fill in fields at your own pace as the character develops on the page.

📝

Manuscript appearances

Every paragraph where the character appears is listed and linked. Jump straight to any scene; see context for any reference. The profile and the prose stay in sync.

Synopsis Builder

📝

Chapter summaries

Write a summary for each chapter as you go. The synopsis builds itself chapter by chapter; export anytime as a working synopsis .docx for your own reference.

🗎

Working synopsis export

Generate a polished .docx of your chapter summaries to share, print, or keep alongside your draft. Built from your own chapter notes — on the Simple plan or with AI-drafted summaries on Advanced.

Narrative Voice — Manual

👁

Set POV & tense per chapter

Mark each chapter's dominant point of view and tense with dropdowns. Build a chapter-by-chapter map of how your narrative voice moves through the manuscript. (Advanced plan adds AI detection and deviation flagging.)

Search & Audit

🔎

Full manuscript search

Search by word, story element, cross-reference, or relationship — combined or alone. Results in chapter order with full paragraph context. Case-sensitive mode available. Aliases expand automatically.

📊

Continuity audit

A project health check that surfaces gaps, isolated elements, unscanned chapters, and possible category mismatches — so you can fix problems before your manuscript goes to a reader or editor.

🚩

Flagged for review

Bookmark any paragraph with a reason — continuity concern, scene to revisit, detail to verify. All flags in one place, grouped by chapter, resolvable when you're ready.

Project Notes

📝

Rich-text scratchpad

A freeform notes space attached to each project. Jot research, world-building rules, character backstory, anything your manuscript depends on. Supports formatting and font colors. Auto-saves as you type.

💌

Email-to-notes inbox

Email an idea to your project's dedicated address from your phone and it lands in a review inbox — waiting for you when you sit back down. Add it to your scratchpad or discard it. Great for capturing thoughts on the go.

Genre Templates

📚

Six starting templates

Start with a template tuned to what you're writing: General Fiction, Mystery / Thriller, Fantasy / Sci-Fi, Non-Fiction, Memoir, or Biography. Each one seeds your project with sensible starting element types so you're never staring at a blank page.

🏷

Genre-aware element labels

Terminology adapts to the form. Memoir and Non-Fiction show "People" and "Places" instead of "Character" and "Location." Biography uses "Figures." Underlying tracking stays unified; only labels change to fit your work.

🧹

Genre-specific element types

Non-fiction templates seed Sources and Topics. Memoir adds Themes. Biography adds Works. The structural elements that matter to each form are there from the start — and any custom element types you need can be added at any time.

Manuscript Management

📄

Whole manuscript import

Upload your entire manuscript as a single .txt or .docx file. NovelContinuity auto-detects chapter breaks from Scrivener, Word, Vellum, Atticus, and most writing apps — or highlight your own separator in a live file preview. Confirm the breaks before anything commits.

📁

Chapter management

Upload chapters individually, in batches, or as a whole manuscript. Add, rename, reorder (drag and drop), and remove chapters. Track status — Draft, Revised, or Final — per chapter.

Inline paragraph editing

Spot a typo or continuity error while reading? Edit any paragraph directly in NovelContinuity — no switching between applications. All your story elements stay linked through the edit.

🗎

Export chapter to .docx

Download any chapter as a properly formatted Word document with all your edits applied. Take your corrected chapter back to your writing tool.

A note on the AI

NovelContinuity uses AI as a detection and assistance tool only. It identifies story elements, drafts summaries, and generates profiles from your manuscript — it does not write, suggest changes to your prose, or influence your story in any way. Everything the AI produces goes through your review before anything is added to your project. Your story is yours alone.

Advanced Plan Adds

AI doing the heavy lifting

Everything above, plus AI reading your manuscript so you don't start from scratch. You still review, edit, and accept — the AI just shortens the work to a fraction of the manual version.

AI character profile generation

AI reads your manuscript and drafts physical description, background, relationships, key events, and speech patterns for each character. Review every field; accept, edit, or dismiss.

AI chapter summaries

Generate a summary for each chapter — one at a time or all at once. AI reads each chapter and drafts a third-person present tense summary; you accept, edit, or dismiss.

AI Publishing Synopsis

AI synthesizes your chapter summaries into a tight 500-800 word narrative synopsis — no chapter headings, opens with the hook, tells the full story. Ready for agents and editors.

Emotional Beat Classification

AI reads each chapter and labels its dominant emotional beat — setup, revelation, confrontation, crisis, resolution, and more. A streak indicator surfaces when several chapters in a row land on the same beat. Non-editable by design: the value is in the outside reading. See how it works →

Narrative Voice AI detection

AI detects each chapter's dominant point of view and tense, with a Why? explanation. Flags paragraphs that deviate from the chapter's dominant voice. Intentional shifts — dream sequences, flash-forwards — can be marked as such so they stop being surfaced.

More scan credits

50 scan credits per month (vs. 15 on Simple). Enough to scan a full novel in a single month, with credits left over for re-scans after major revisions. Credits never expire.
